Double Taxation Treaties

Cyprus has established Double Taxation Treaties with multiple countries that aim to remove the double taxation of income or gains that arises in one region to another region. They work by dividing the tax rights each country claims by its domestic laws over the same income and gains.

Cyprus’ double taxation treaties could involve the following

  • describe which taxes are applicable and who is a resident and therefor entitled for benefits,
  • shrink the amounts of tax withheld from interest, dividends, and royalties paid by a resident of one country to residents of the other country,
  • limit tax of one country on business income of a resident of the other country to that income from a permanent establishment in the first country,
  • outline situations in which income of individuals resident in one country will be taxed in the other country, including wage, self-employment, pension, and other earnings,
  • exemption of certain types of organizations or individuals, and
  • practical frameworks for implementation and dispute resolution.
